Suffer Little Children

Viveca Koh FRPS FIPF22 March 20117 March 2016
Child's toy pram in corridor, with murals, windows and doorways, derelict Hellingly Asylum, West Sussex

Corridor in the children's wards at West Park abandoned Asylum (Viveca Koh)

The children’s wards at West Park Asylum, every corridor and room is painted with bright and cheerful murals of favourite characters from fiction and film, now peeling and flaking into dust.  Labels with the names of children are attached to the wall on the left here, did these once indicate to whom these rooms belonged?  Stephen’s label lies forlornly on the floor, detached from the rest, I want to pick it up and try to stick it back, but know it will be futile, so I leave it there.

It is so quiet here now.  The corridors must at one point have echoed with the voices of children and their carers, maybe some cries of fear and distress, maybe even laughter if the young inmates became so immersed in a game that they forgot briefly where they were….

More quick photos from the children’s ward on my other blog.

Amazing image, love the tones of the walls and the baby stroller is perfect. Great capture!

Really poignant photo, Viveca. This series is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. Thanks for sharing your words and images with us.

Loving the border, great PP and a nice eerie pram to finish it all off. This is possibly my favourite ward in West Park, but I’ve heard so many people dismiss it as being boring and without much there other than a ‘cot or two’; the group I was with on my second visit here didn’t even bother going there even though we went everywhere else. You’ve done a great job in capturing and highlighting the detail here.

Thanks Mike, and I love this ward too, I can’t really understand how people could dismiss it so readily, but I guess it’s a matter of taste.

This is the most compelling image you’ve produced Viveca. What a dramatic and highly emotionally charged scene, wonderfully captured and exquisitely processed!! I love this picture, albeit with a somewhat broken heart for the children who’s ghosts run the hallways….

Wow is this ever a striking image. That little toy in the middle of the hall, along with all the dilapidated walls is a powerful image. Great job!!
