Stygian Echoes

Viveca Koh FRPS FIPF7 February 20117 March 2016
Windows and water reflection, derelict Hellingly Asylum, West Sussex

Channel of water inside Hellingly Asylum (Viveca Koh)

I loved the reflection here and wanted to create a very symmetrical image, whilst at the same time giving the illusion of an almost two-dimensional collage of separate parts coming together.  The texture added is a rusted metal sheet that I photographed at Nutborne Brickworks last year, plus one from Skeltalmess, both masked out where I wanted to lessen the effect.   The title refers to the River Styx, the reference being in the channel of water on top of the brick room divider (?), where an unfortunate moth met its end, echoing in metaphor the souls being rowed across to Hades > Underworld > Hell > Hellingly.

Not that I’m heavy or anything 😉

Great shot here. I am a sucker for symmetry. Also, as usual, your application of textures is spot on! Nice work!

I love the processing and texturing you give your images. Absolutely otherworldly. This is no exception.
And your comments … not heavy at all … Rather, very deep!

Holy Toledo Viveca!!! What an astonishing image and blog post today! The picture in and of itself is breathtaking, but when put together with the context of your blog it’s absolutely profound. As a youngster I did study a bit of Dante’s Trilogy and your post today really struck me as being a parallel of that experience, for me personally. Wonderful work!!!

Lovely processing – I thought you spotted a nice reflection when we were there.
