Our Hearts Will Always Separate

Multiplicity self portrait at Hellingly Asylum (Viveca Koh)

Took this one at Hellingly Asylum on Sunday.  I was initially attracted to the three rooms in a row, which were all painted a different colour inside and made me think of sweets, in particular because of the tiny glass windows high above the doors, glazed with extremely thick glass now cracked like a boiled sweet crushed underfoot.  What was the point of those windows in those tiny cell-like rooms?  To let more light in, even though each room had a window to the outside of the building?  Or to let some small amount of light out from the rooms into the big room beyond?  I wasn’t sure, but didn’t think that any amount of glazing could counteract the severe claustrophobia that must have been felt by patients incarcerated in these rooms….

This image was made using a close up photo of the wallpaper above the brickwork, overlaid on the entire photo, plus one other from Skeletalmess, to enhance the soiled texture from the old paper.  As always, I selectively mask out all the areas I want to enhance or knock back the texture a bit.  Title courtesy of a line from ‘Unspoken’ by Hurts, a song that I love – over time, I plan to create an image for every line of the song – this is the first one that I did.

Excellent idea perfectly executed. Always good to have odd numbers so I’m told and I like how the one on the right is slightly further apart from the other two. As always, your use of texture is top notch! 🙂

Viveca, I really like the creativity you’ve imparted into this shot. The composition is very dynamic, the colors very pleasing and the texture adds to the dimensionality. The model looks pretty good too:) Very nice work my friend!
