Spirit of the Bath

Viveca Koh FRPS FIPF12 February 20117 March 2016
Painting by street artist Req, derelict Hellingly Asylum, West Sussex

Painting by REQ of bath woman on the wall at Hellingly Asylum (Viveca Koh)

The beautiful painting by REQ of the ‘Bath Lady’ at Hellingly Asylum, now sadly defaced, but I was lucky enough to get a shot before this happened.  I am sure she would rather be left in peace ….

21st February 2011: I have decided to add the recent photo I took of the Bath Lady, showing the basic amendment that man seems compelled to make, but equally it shows the entire room in context and is a record of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ :

Also a close-up detail:

Why in the name of everything holy would someone do that to such a BEAUTIFUL work of art. Harumph. That’s just lame beyond words. This is a very important blog entry, Viveca, I love that you’ve preserved this artwork forever, and the “behind the scenes” additions today are critical… especially under the circumstances that the facility is now gone forever. Great great work here.

“Harumph!” was my first reaction to that too – said very grumpily to Mr B “well, I’m not going to photograph that!” and so didn’t but stomped off in a mild huff instead. However the following week when we returned, I think it was the demolition of the hall that made me realise none of it was going to be there for much longer, and I wanted to record as much as I could. At least I got to photograph the ‘before’ version almost two years ago!

Yup great shame that the red paint man has decided to ‘have a laugh’ – he’s obviously an utter cock

This photo took my breath away, Viveca! How wonderful! I am so glad you captured this before it was forever lost. Oh my God, it’s just so wonderful….
